Pablo Picasso, one of the most famous artists of the 20th Century, spent a few years of his youth in Barcelona. Relatively late in April 1963 the city of Barcelona opened the Picasso Museum. The museum is located in the Barri Gòtic. The reason for the founding of the museum was a large collection of works that Jaime Sabatés – former secretary and friend of Picasso – devoted to the city. For this purpose, the Palacio de Berenguer d’Aguilar – an old city palace from the 15th Century – turned into a museum.
The artist himself did not take the city to constitute some of his work. The series of “Meninas” is by Picasso himself. His wife, Jacqueline Picasso, and the museum dedicated in 1982 a 41-piece collection of ceramics, from 1947 to 1965 which were created by the artist.
